海外中文教育的重要性不言而喻。

The importance of overseas Chinese education is self-evident.

 

尔湾金色阳光学院已走过了九年的历程。中文是我们非常重要补习课程。一直以来想把我们在海外汉语教学方面的理念与大家分享,目的是让更多的家长了解我们的教学,为喜欢学习汉语的海外儿童提供一条正确的学习途径。

Irvine Golden Sunshine Academy has been in operation for nine years. Chinese is a very important subject in our curriculum. We have always wanted to share our philosophy of Chinese language teaching overseas, aiming to help more parents understand our teaching methods and provide a correct path for children overseas who are interested in learning Chinese.

培根曾经说过,“经验是最好的论证方法。” 的确如此,对一所学校而言,不仅仅是教学体系的建立,更为重要的是教学理念与教学成果的相得益彰。值得庆幸的是金色阳光中文学校经过几年的教学实践,走出了一条适合海外儿童的汉语教学之路。受益之处源于我们以下几个方面的思考。

As Francis Bacon once said, "Experience is the best method of proof." This is indeed the case. For a school, it's not just about establishing a teaching system; more importantly, it's about aligning teaching philosophy with teaching outcomes. Fortunately, after years of practice, Golden Sunshine Chinese School has found a path to Chinese language teaching suitable for overseas children. 

(1) 语音标准、基础牢固是金色阳光的教学宗旨
Standard Pronunciation and Solid Foundation are the Teaching Principles of Golden Sunshine Academy

“语音标准、基础牢固”是我们在办校初始便确立并始终遵循的教学宗旨。经过几年的教学实践,我们越发地感觉到这个指导方向的必要性,让我们一开始便有了正确的教学理念。它的确立基于汉语自身的特点及海外汉语的教学特点而来。

"Standard pronunciation and solid foundation" were established as our teaching principles at the very beginning of our school and have always been followed. Through years of teaching practice, we increasingly feel the necessity of this guiding direction, which has given us the correct teaching philosophy from the start. This principle is based on the characteristics of the Chinese language itself and the unique aspects of teaching Chinese overseas.

1:汉语的特点决定了语音的重要性。

      汉语是字调语言,每个字都有四声,而汉字就是通过四声来区分词义的,所以语音在汉语的学习中是最重要的部分。除了区分词义,正确的语音还有助于帮助对字形的记忆。我们都知道,汉语的另一大特点是方块儿字,这对熟悉字母语言的海外孩子来说学习起来比较难,但由于人们对语言的记忆是通过语音储存在大脑中的,所以在学习的过程中用正确的读音带动字形的记忆会非常牢固。

 

1. The Characteristics of Chinese Determine the Importance of Pronunciation

 

   Chinese is a tonal language where each character has four tones, which are used to distinguish meanings. Therefore, pronunciation is the most important part of learning Chinese. In addition to distinguishing meanings, correct pronunciation also helps with memorizing characters. As we know, another major feature of Chinese is the square character script, which can be challenging for children familiar with alphabetic languages. However, since language memory is stored in the brain through sound, using correct pronunciation to reinforce the memory of characters during the learning process can be very effective.

2:缺少语言环境是海外儿童学习汉语时面对的最困难的问题

      任何一门语言的学习,最有效的方法就是经常反复地使用。这对在海外学习汉语来说,显然无法做到。海外学习汉语的学生大多由两部分构成,一部分学生家里父母讲汉语、一部分是完全没有汉语环境的学生。即便是家里有汉语环境的学生,他们大部分时间也是在使用英语交流,汉语并非第一语言,使用频率不高,很多学生会边学边忘。太多的家长及孩子的感触是,汉语学习虽然坚持了很多年,但并不能达到预期的效果。这似乎成了海外儿童学习汉语的通病。如何解决这个问题?经过认真思考,我们认为打好基础是关键,初始阶段的教学中,从教材选择到教学重点,都要偏重于基础知识的夯实,不追求速度,每一个字词,从读音、写法到用法,都要反复巩固、加深理解和记忆。

2. The Lack of Language Environment is the Biggest Challenge for Overseas Children Learning Chinese

 

   For any language, the most effective learning method is regular and repeated use, which is obviously impossible for those learning Chinese overseas. Students learning Chinese overseas are mostly divided into two groups: one group comes from families where parents speak Chinese, while the other has no Chinese environment at all. Even for students with a Chinese-speaking environment at home, they spend most of their time communicating in English. Chinese is not their first language and is not frequently used. Many students tend to forget as they learn. Many parents and children feel that despite learning Chinese for many years, they have not achieved the expected results. This seems to be a common problem for overseas children learning Chinese. How to solve this problem? After careful consideration, we believe that laying a solid foundation is key. In the initial stage of teaching, from the choice of textbooks to the focus of teaching, we emphasize the reinforcement of basic knowledge without rushing. Every character and word, from pronunciation, writing to usage, must be repeatedly consolidated to deepen understanding and memory.

(2) 基础汉语、朗诵课是金色阳光关于中文的两部分教学内容
Basic Chinese and Recitation Classes are the Two Parts of Golden Sunshine's Chinese Teaching Content

课程体系是教学目标得以实现的基础,是通向教学成果的重要手段。基础汉语、朗诵课是我们汉语教学的两部分课程,既相互独立,又相互配合,让孩子们的汉语学习生动、扎实、有趣。

​The curriculum system is the foundation for achieving teaching goals and is an important means to achieve teaching results. Basic Chinese and recitation classes are the two parts of our Chinese teaching curriculum. They are both independent and interdependent, making Chinese learning lively, solid, and interesting for children.

 1:大量识字、分级阅读是金色阳光基础汉语的教学重点

基础汉语教学我们设立了4到5岁的幼儿汉语班、5到6岁的拼音班、各年龄段基础不牢固的拼音强化班、1到12年级的汉语班及更高级别的中文SAT、AP课。

 

无论是在哪个年龄段,我们都把“听说读写”能力的提升作为教学的核心。而前提是需要学生大量识字。因此,在教学中如何做到这几方面的真正提高是我们反复思考、实践的重点。

在教学内容的选择上,从低龄开始,我们就逐级增加了大量的识字、阅读部分,使我们的孩子从4岁开始完成对汉语语音、字形、笔画的认知到更高层次的学习过程。

1. Emphasis on Character Recognition and Graded Reading in Basic Chinese Teaching

 

   In basic Chinese teaching, we have established Chinese classes for children aged 4 to 5, Pinyin classes for children aged 5 to 6, Pinyin reinforcement classes for all ages, Chinese classes from grades 1 to 12, and more advanced SAT and AP Chinese classes.

 

   Regardless of age, we focus on enhancing students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The premise is that students need to recognize many characters. Therefore, how to achieve real improvement in these areas has been the focus of our repeated thinking and practice.

 

   In the selection of teaching content, we have progressively increased the amount of character recognition and reading from an early age, enabling our children to go from recognizing Chinese phonetics, character shapes, and strokes at age four to higher levels of learning.

2:丰富、立体的教材配置是金色阳光的独家特色

任何一个学科目标的设立,教材是最重要的载体。目前的海外汉语学习教材丰富多彩,在建校初期教材的选择上,我们进行了大量的比较,最后我们采用的基础教材是暨南大学专门为海外儿童编纂的对外汉语教材。这套教材是由众多资深的汉语专家、学者经过多年潜心研究、符合汉语学习规律的教材,可以说是目前在海外被采用最早、使用最广泛、经过了长时间检验的教材。

当然,任何一套教材都有它的局限性。暨南大学的这套教材特点是注重基础知识的反复巩固,没有汉语背景下的海外孩子学习起来,实用性有限,相对缺乏一定的趣味性。我们经过了大量的论证,在这套教材的基础上,配置了阅读、识字等内容,使我们的整体教学更加丰满,真正做到了“听说读写”方面的全方位教学。

2. Rich and Multifaceted Textbook Configuration is a Unique Feature of Golden Sunshine

 

   Textbooks are the most important carriers for setting academic goals in any subject. At the beginning of the school, we conducted a lot of comparisons in choosing textbooks and finally adopted the overseas Chinese language textbooks compiled by Jinan University specifically for overseas children. This set of textbooks, developed by many experienced Chinese experts and scholars after years of research, follows the rules of learning Chinese. It is one of the earliest and most widely used textbooks for overseas Chinese education and has been tested over a long period.

 

   Of course, any textbook has its limitations. Jinan University's textbooks focus on repeated reinforcement of basic knowledge, which can be less practical and relatively lacking in fun for overseas children without a Chinese background. After a lot of deliberation, we have supplemented this textbook with additional content such as reading and character recognition, making our overall teaching more comprehensive and truly achieving well-rounded teaching in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

 

3:优秀的师资队伍是金色阳光的宝贵资源

如果说完备的教学体系是立校之本,那么教师则是其中重要的实践者。我们对教师的选择是严格的。

首先,我们的授课教师必须会说标准的汉语普通话,能声情并茂地表情达意。这是一个硬性条件,是符合汉语学习基本规律的要求,我们做到必须保证每一个在金色阳光学习的孩子,接受的都是纯正的汉语普通话的教学,让孩子们认识到汉语的美,从小树立起正确的语言面貌。

另外,我们的教师必须具备丰富的教学经验,既有深厚的文化功底,又有教学技巧。金色阳光的汉语教学虽然不依赖某个教师个体,但每位教师独特的个性魅力,使我们的课堂生动、有趣,让孩子们因老师而喜欢上汉语。

 

3. A Strong Teaching Staff is Golden Sunshine's Valuable Resource

 

   If a comprehensive teaching system is the foundation of a school, then teachers are its essential practitioners. We are very strict in selecting teachers.

 

   Firstly, our teachers must speak standard Mandarin and be able to express themselves with emotion and clarity. This is a rigid requirement in line with the basic rules of learning Chinese. We ensure that every child at Golden Sunshine receives authentic Mandarin instruction and understands the beauty of Chinese, establishing a correct language image from a young age.

 

   Additionally, our teachers must have rich teaching experience, a solid cultural background, and teaching skills. Although Golden Sunshine's Chinese teaching does not rely on any individual teacher, each teacher's unique charm makes our classes lively and interesting, encouraging children to love Chinese because of their teachers.

4:朗诵课是金色阳光的独家特色

艺术语言表达是汉语学习的更高层次。对海外的孩子来说,艺术语言的学习意义尤其重大。我们的教材由有多年教学经验的语音专家专门为海外儿童编写,通过丰富多彩的教学手段和内容,得到了语音、口语表达、舞台表演、众人面前表达自信心的树立、汉语学习兴趣等方方面面的提高。

艺术语言的基础训练是语音。我们前面讲过,中英文最大的区别是汉语是字调语言,而英语是句调语言。海外的孩子说不好普通话的重要原因之一是两种语言的发音区别。我们完全按照汉语的发音规律,科学的、有针对性地矫正每个孩子的发音问题。

 

语言的终极目标是表达。表达需要真情实感,需要大量的词汇。我们的训练包括绕口令、诗歌、散文、成语故事、舞台剧等不同形式,大量的朗朗上口的背诵内容,使孩子们积累了丰富的各种题材的美文,很多优美的语句在不经意间会脱口而出,是汉语学习的一种最好的方式。

 

4. Recitation Classes are a Unique Feature of Golden Sunshine

 

   Artistic language expression is a higher level of Chinese learning. For overseas children, learning artistic language is particularly important. Our textbooks, specially compiled for overseas children by phonetic experts with many years of teaching experience, improve all aspects of pronunciation, oral expression, stage performance, confidence in public speaking, and interest in learning Chinese through diverse teaching methods and content.

 

   The foundation of artistic language training is pronunciation. As mentioned earlier, the biggest difference between Chinese and English is that Chinese is a tonal language while English is an intonation language. One of the main reasons overseas children struggle with Mandarin is the difference in pronunciation between the two languages. We scientifically and systematically correct each child's pronunciation problems according to Chinese phonetic rules.

   The ultimate goal of language is expression. Expression requires true feelings and a large vocabulary. Our training includes various forms such as tongue twisters, poetry, prose, idiom stories, and stage plays. A large amount of catchy recitation material allows children to accumulate rich beautiful literature of various genres, and many beautiful phrases can be spoken unconsciously, making it one of the best ways to learn Chinese.

每年一度的汇报演出是孩子们学习成果的展示。艺术语言的学习,需要经过实践的检验,舞台上的表演,最能帮助孩子们体会艺术语言的魅力。今年的汇报表演即将举办,相信孩子们都会有精彩的表现。

金色阳光的在读学生中,有近三分之一选择了同时进行基础汉语及朗诵两门课程的学习。因为越来越多的孩子受益于这门课的学习,而这一教学成果也被众多家长认可和接受。我们目前开设的4个朗诵班已无空余名额。

   The annual showcase performance is an exhibition of the children's learning achievements. Learning artistic language needs to be tested in practice, and stage performances help children appreciate the charm of artistic language. This year's showcase performance is about to be held, and we believe that all the children will deliver wonderful performances.

 

   Nearly one-third of the students at Golden Sunshine are enrolled in both Basic Chinese and Recitation classes simultaneously. As more and more children benefit from this course, the teaching results have been recognized and accepted by many parents. Currently, our four recitation classes have no available slots.

(3) 课后沟通是金色阳光课堂教学的延展
Post-Class Communication is an Extension of Golden Sunshine's Classroom Teaching

海外中文教学本身属于课后补习,不是钢需。因此,在孩子的重视程度、家长的期望值上会有个体上的差异。孩子的汉语学习需要学校、孩子和家长的共同努力。如何把我们的教学理念传递给家长,如何让孩子按要求完成我们的教学计划,及时的课后沟通是我们加强与家长联系的有效方式,达到了非常好的效果。

我们每节课后,老师都要把教学内容告知家长,也会从家长那里得到有关孩子们在家学习情况的反馈。

对于一些同学在学习中出现的问题,我们的老师也会主动联系家长,与家长共同找原因,想办法,保证每一个在校学生完成正常的教学计划。

Overseas Chinese teaching itself is an extracurricular tutoring subject, not a rigid necessity. Therefore, the degree of importance placed by children and the expectations of parents may vary. Children's Chinese learning requires the joint efforts of schools, children, and parents. How to convey our teaching philosophy to parents and how to ensure that children complete our teaching plan as required are crucial. Timely post-class communication is an effective way to strengthen contact with parents, achieving very good results.

 

After each class, teachers inform parents of the teaching content and receive feedback on the children's home study situation from them. For some students who encounter problems in their studies, our teachers also proactively contact parents to find reasons and solutions together, ensuring that every student completes the normal teaching plan.

著名教育家陶行知说过:“培养教育人和种花木一样,首先要认识花木的特点,区别不同情况给以施肥、浇水和培养教育,这叫“因材施教”。海外汉语教学,更应因材施教,因地施教。在教材研发、教学方法等太多方面等待我们去探索。金色阳光会继续努力!

The famous educator Tao Xingzhi once said, "Educating people is like planting flowers and trees. First, you need to understand the characteristics of flowers and trees, and then fertilize, water, and cultivate them according to different situations. This is called 'teaching according to aptitude.'" Teaching Chinese overseas should especially be tailored to different students and locations. There are many aspects in textbook development and teaching methods that we need to explore. Golden Sunshine will continue to work hard!
